Learn About Shapes

Shapes are all around us! Teaching shapes to children can be a fun and engaging process. Our shape flashcards are a great visual learning aid when introducing this topic to young learners.

Here are some strategies to effectively introduce and reinforce shape recognition:

INTRODUCE BASIC SHAPES

Start with the most basic shapes, which are included in our flash card set. (Circle, oval, square, rectangle, triangle, diamond). As your young learner becomes more comfortable with the basics, you can introduce more complex shapes (pentagons, hexagons, etc.)

USE VISUAL AIDS

Use our flashcard set to reinforce the shapes. For further familiarization with these shapes, you can decorate your classroom with these flashcards.

Our aim in creating this set was th ensure they were bold and brighly colored.

Along with flashcards, find picture books that focus on shapes.

INCORPORATE PLAY

Shape Hunt: Hide the flashcards around the classroom and get the students to find them. Call out a specific shape one at a time for the students to listen to and find.

*this works best when you print out the flashcards small sized

Memory Match: Print out 2 sets of our shape flashcards. Lay out pairs of flashcards face down in a grid. Your young learners can take turns flipping over two cards at a time, trying to find matching pairs. If they find a match, they keep the cards and take another turn. The player with the most paris at the end wins!

HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES

Shape Sorting: Provide a variety of objects and have children sort them by shape. Have the children placec the object on top of the corresponding flashcard. (Square-shaped objects on top of the square flashcard, circle-shaped objects on top of the circle flashcard, etc.)

Shape Tracing: Provide worksheets where children can trace shapes. You can find shape worksheets under the “Shapes” category in the printable worksheets section of our website.

EVERYDAY INTEGRATION

Whether you are in the classroom, home, or outside at the part, it’s important to identify shapes in our everyday surroundings. It enhances a young learner’s cognitive development, observational skills, and overall understanding of the world around them.

You can watch our shapes video on YouTube to further help young learners in identifying shapes in their surroundings.
